Chief Justice John Roberts went to the White House tonight to re-administer the presidential oath of office to Barack Obama. Yesterday, as you'll recall, the two men struggled with the 36-word, Constitutionally mandated oath, resulting in Obama's misplacement of the word "faithfully". Concerned that some might question the validity of the swearing-in, Obama's aides decided to ask Roberts to swear him in again. This time, when Roberts asked him if he was ready to take the oath, Obama replied "I am. And we’re going to do it very slowly.”

That was possibly the reason why the second oath was done without a Bible.
