The World Outside Of My Kitchen

Apparently, while my head is stuck deep in my kitchen cabinets, the outside world continues to rotate. A quick check of the news revealed:
  • Former Nazi death camp guard John Demjanjuk has been living in Cleveland, Ohio for decades. His U.S. citizenship was revoked in 1981 when the Justice Department alleged that he was the notorious "Ivan the Terrible" from the Treblinka death camp in Poland. He was extradited to Israel five years later and found guilty of war crimes after a wrenching and highly emotional public trial. He appealed, and Israel's Supreme Court in 1993 ruled that Demjanjuk was not "Ivan the Terrible" and allowed him to return to the United States. His U.S. citizenship was restored in 1998. Four years later, his U.S. citizenship was stripped again, (based on charges that he was an accessory to murder at the Sobibor death camp in Poland) and an immigration judge ruled that he could be deported. He was scheduled to arrive in Germany to stand trial today, but his attorneys won him a stay of deportation on Friday. A U.S. immigration judge in Virginia reversed that decision today, and so this 89 year old animal with nine lives can finally be deported. Problem is, he is appealing this decision as well, claiming that sending him to Germany would amount to torture because of his advanced age and poor health. (I have some other ideas about what can be done with him...)
  • A horrible earthquake has struck Italy. 150 people have died and about 100,000 are now homeless. The area is devastated.
  • Everyone's favorite Charlie's Angel, Farrah Fawcett, is hospitalized as doctors discover that her cancer has spread. Meanwhile, her son was arrested yet again on drug charges.
Sigh. Lots of bad stuff going on in the world. I think I'll grab my cleansers and stick my head back in the cabinets...
