What's The Worst Thing You've Ever Said To Your Children?

Ahem. I'll go first:

(While sitting around the dinner table, watching them scarf down half a paycheck's worth of food in one sitting, and desperately trying to "balance" my checkbook with non-existent funds):

"I've figured out what the problem is. I have three children, but I can really only afford two. One of you has got to go."

Let's see you top that.

I once told my oldest son, when he was going off to Yeshiva high school (boarding school here) that if he got kicked out for doing things like cutting classes or pulling pranks or going to the beach instead of class or something 'normal' I could take it (i.e. he'd get a talking to etc) but if they threw him out for being being chutpzdic or insulting a teacher or a rav, he'd better not bother coming home.

During a very horrible day, I actually broke down and said to my autistic son, "Why are you are making my life so much harder?" Great mommy skills, huh? Luckily, it went straight over his head and he calmly answered, "because I want to go outside".

Funny.
My very sensitive, oldest daughter thinks the worst thing I've ever said is to my middle daughter "You did a great job."
Oy, the tears and "Why didn't you say that I did a great job, Ima?"

the only thing worse would have been if you identified the child that had to go

My cousin was once sitting with his three kids, when he told his middle child, a boy, that if he ever had to let one of his children go, it would have to be him (the middle child) because the oldest is, well the oldest, and the youngest is his only girl.
The middle child, who is very good at a lot of sports, said "but dad, I am your only ticket to fame and fortune!" My cousin thought for a few minutes and then turned to his oldest son. "That's it kiddo! You're out!"

I have said way worse things to most of my kids. Numerous times. I can't believe you think these are so bad.

Yes of course they discussed it. After a moment of stunned silence, they each began to "offer up" the others. I was so mortified that I had let that slip out that I put a stop to their conversation.

tesyaa-
No way are you getting off so easy. We want to hear the "way worse things" that you've said. (Don't worry, you write anonymously, nobody will know it was you).

Funny, they've all slipped my mind right about now. How about this one? "You're all useless."

I always tell my kids, separately and individually and about the other sibling that they are my favorite. As in, Q-"How come SHE gets to stay up late?" A- "Because she's my favorite."

I also try to say "no" at least once a day. But my kids make that goal extremely easy to achieve.

When they complained about favored treatment of their sibling, I used to tell each of my kids "that's because so & so is the favorite". They caught on by saying, "I thought you told so & so that I was the favorite" & I would reply "yes, that's true, you are both my favorites." I figure the confusion must have caused them some harm, but they both love me and each other, so I guess things turned out OK.

FrumTeacher: I like what you said about Shana Rishona with the kid. I think I'm gonna add that to my list of quotes!
